Strings Attached

In Summer term 2011 we provided a term's violin classes for £5.00 with free instrument loan for those wishing to try the violin. Ivor Cox is giving these classes and should a child wish to continue, lessons will be with a teacher of their choice at the going rate. Bursary support for further lessons may be available and instruments can be borrowed from the library (see below) for a returnable deposit. We aim to improve the uptake of the violin (,viola, 'cello and bass) and to bring the advantages of musicianship to as many children as possible.

This project operates in co-ordination with South Powys Youth Music and has the support of the South Powys Music Co-ordinator.

We have visited Llanelwedd, Dolafon and Irfon Valley primary schools and were well received by all. By the Summer break we had 12 participants from Llanelwedd and 3 from Dolafon. We have provided instruments for them all from our own funds and with instruments loaned by the Oratory Preparatory School, Oxfordshire.

Starting in September 2011, we will offer Strings Attached at the start of each academic year. It will be restricted to those who have not participated before and will be for half a term but will include instrument loan.

Symphony (formerly Beulah Symphony)

This is our initiative to provide local ensembles, where there are currently none, for all young instrumentalists of all standards: you will only need basic music reading skills to join. All orchestral instruments are welcome.

Llanelwedd Symphony is a children's all instrument after school activity planned to start during the Winter term at Llanelwedd Primary School.

We are negotiating with Irfon Valley Primary School to set up Irfon Symphony on similar lines.

Beulah Symphony, the original ensemble, is an instrumental group that meets every Friday in Beulah Reading Room between 5.00 and 6.30. We learn musicianship and ensemble while we play arrangements of classical and modern music. This group is for all ages and abilities. We are gradually phasing the evening such that the youngest play for about an hour at the start. For half an hour everybody rehearses together and then the older players carry on (they form a band ensemble for jazz and show music).

The Beulah Music Festival (BMF) Gift

This is a scheme where the Festival Committee liaises with individuals and other organisations such as schools to identify outstanding young musicians. The selected musicians are given the opportunity to perform solo or in ensemble in our concerts alongside experienced and professional musicians.

Recent recipients:

Owen Jordan (violin)

Louise Wilcocks (flute)

Clare Butterfield-Elsey (soprano)

The BMF Instrument Library

We are working to build up a library of orchestral instruments which we will hire out or lend to young musicians, especially those thinking of starting and who might be discouraged by the expense of purchase or hire. We are seeking gifts or loans of instruments to this end and are prepared to purchase if appropriate. Each instrument will be properly maintained and insured.

If you have an instrument that you would consider lending or donating, please contact Hilary Cox for more information:
